Axolotl's are named after Sholotl(also spelled Xolotl), a major deity in Aztec mythology for lightning, death, the evening star (Venus), fire, and the underworld. Axolotl is an aquatic amphibian salamander native to the fresh water canal systems of Xochimilco in the southern parts of Mexico city. Axolotl's face being critically endangered on the endangerd list of animals due to urbanization and pollution to their wildlife.
The axolotl is forever juvenile salamander that never fully mature to adulthood. Most axolotls live in the water their whole lives. There are rare cases of axolotls fully maturing to live on land through changes of their thyroid gland, though these cases are few due to slow process. The axolotl have regeneration and can regrow limbs causing much research to be done to see if we can learn regrow human cells because they are the only non-vertebrates to be able to do this its whole lifespan.
